Reasons to be Cheerful

Today I'm walking around the house armed with tissues and hand sanitiser gel.

Toddler penguin has a shocker cough and a runny nose. I stupidly googled symptoms and am worried he has whooping cough or scarlet fever as he has what I thought was eczema.

He is under strict instructions to stay away from baby penguin however she is also snotty. Surprisingly it hasn't affected his mood and he is still really chirpy! And luckily he is a bit OCD about the snot which means he is asking for a tissue every 3 minutes!

On a brighter note...baby penguin slept through till 4am! She is nearly 5½ months so about time. Shame toddler penguin had me up at 2am for an hour then was up at 6am :(

So what am I cheerful for? Calpol......cuddles....TV....and the large glass of wine that awaits me at the end of the day!

Oh and baby penguin rolled!

Reasons to be Cheerful

The weeks are flying by!  I've really noticed a change with it staying lighter for longer.  It feels like the evenings are longer.  Papa penguin has made it home by 6pm most nights this week and has gone out into the garden for about 10 mins as we're trying to dig up lots of horrible spider bushes and turns out we need to replace the fence.  Actually both sides need doing....we just need to have that discussion with the neighbours!

So getting back to reasons to be cheerful.....

Baby penguin has found her feet!  She loves feed and huggies wipes wrapper!  Don't know why I buy toys really!

Toddler penguin is getting used to chopsticks and I can't believe how quick he picked up the pinching concept....

Few silly reasons really but family does make me really cheerful.

This week we had some bad rain and hailstones.  It looked like it had snowed everywhere and there was a sheet of "snow" on the car windscreen that then rolled down and created this cool effect! Love it!

Don't cry over spilt milk...

I'm sat here at 3 minutes past midnight pumping away!  I've had a well needed night out with some fab friends.  We went for dinner and then some cocktails involving some well needed gin.  I made the 1115pm train home and now I'm contemplating pumping and dumping....

For those that are confused by this phrase it basically means that I pump and then erm dump.  I pump every evening before bed (I don't do the so called dream feed).  This breast milk then goes into a bottle for baby penguin to have the following day after her bath.  She is quicker to feed from a bottle and it gives papa penguin some time alone with her (though its usually sitting on the loo seat supervising toddler penguins' bathtime) whilst I get dinner ready and clear up the house.  Dumping means throwing it straight away.

So tonight I've had 3 glasses of pinot grigio, two gin cocktails, a G&T and a butterscotch schnapps and now I'm contemplating the dumping method.  I'm worried that the amount of alcohol I've consumed will segregate into my breastmilk and be passed onto baby penguin.

There is that phrase "don't cry over spilt milk".....well the person that came up with that phrase never pumped for 20 minutes just to get 5+oz and then poured it down the sink or as has happened before accidentally spilt it over the counter top.  Cue hormones galore and lots of crying!

So having googled my predicament I'm going to hang on to this 5oz till tomorrow and pray that it has no effect on my daughter.  Who knows, maybe she will sleep better tomorrow!

Recipe Review - Dairy Free Quiche

Dairy products (specifically cows produce) does not agree with me. It seems I'm fine during pregnancy and for a while after but then roughly 5 months after giving birth certain things start disagreeing with me again.
Recently I've been craving quiche and I came across this Quick and Easy Quiche recipe.

I used ham and spring onions and had to roll out my pastry (which means I have some left over for jam tarts).  Mixing the beaten egg and the lactofree soft white cheese made it look like cottage cheese and I was a bit worried about how it would turn out but forget that....the evidence is in the picture!

Quiche is one of those meals that I used to love but stopped eating it when I gave up dairy.  Now I think I might just have to make this on a weekly basis it was sooooo yummy!

Reasons to be Cheerful

As I'm writing this the sun is out and it looks gorgeous outside.  Toddler penguin is at nursery and baby penguin is having a catnap. I'm so glad that the snow didn't settle here in Surrey over the past few days, I'm fed up with snow but I am loving this sunshine.  Hope it lasts!

We celebrated papa penguins' 30th birthday at the weekend.  I bought him two tickets to go up The Shard (hope he takes me!) and we visited the in laws (don't forget it was mothers day too) and we had lunch and yummy chocolate and cherry cake.  Can you guess who enjoyed it the most?

We also posed for a family shoot but unfortunately our photographer in the form of papa penguin's aunt didn't have her glasses on and the picture came out a bit blurred!

Potty training is still going really well considering two weeks ago I was ready to give it up!  Toddler penguin is now telling me when he needs potty which I thought we'd never get to.  I'm still putting him on the potty before he gets dressed, before lunch and generally when I think he hasn't been for a while but yesterday we spent the afternoon indoors and whilst baby penguin was having a 3 hour nap we got ALL his toys out!  I completely forgot to ask him about potty but he remembered and told me when he needed to go.  So proud of my little boy!  He is growing up so fast!

Wobbles Wednesday

I've not done a wobbles Wednesday for nearly a month.  However I've still been getting on the scales every few days and using myfittnesspal to log my calorie intake. For a while my weigh loss just plateaued and I put it down to breastfeeding baby penguin but having not been on the scales for a week I got on this morning and can't believe I've lost weight.

I've put my goal as being 63kg (10 stone) but I would be so happy with being 66.5kg (10.5 stone) so was so surprised that I've only 1kg to get there.  Its given me a huge kick of motivation!  I shall not be indulging in the cakes at playgroup this morning !

Original Weight  74kg (163lbs)
Goal Weight  63kg (139lbs)
Four Weeks Ago  68.1kg (150lbs)
Today's Weight67.5kg (148lbs)

Reasons to be Cheerful

Its a lot easier to write this post than it was last week! For a start the sun came out! It was sooo nice, we did some gardening, went to Wisley and had the back door open all afternoon so toddler penguin could go in and out as he pleased!  I even hung some washing outdoors. Roll on spring!

At the weekend we visited friends and ended up at the seafront in Southend. Who knew such a simple day out would be so much fun! We took the scooters out along with seafront, threw pebbles into the sea, put 2p's into the slot machines and even had a few goes on the rides! So much fun had by all doing a typical British activity.

I started my childminding course over the weekend and loved every minute of it, I can't wait till I'm registered! Also papa penguin decided that he couldn't bare leaving the house with two kids on his own (his first time looking after them both by himself) so he took the opportunity to potty train toddler penguin.  Its going so well and I even ventured out to playgroups with him in his pants....no nappies!  We are saving a fortune! He had an accident at nursery today but I think thats down to a distraction from all the toys.

Now come on sunshine where did you go?

Weekly Meal Plan - March 4th & Menu Planning

My sister in law told me about a meal planning app for the iPad and I'm in love with it.  Its called Menu Planner and I'm really getting into it.  You can add recipes to your portfolio, add individual ingredients and do a stock take of your cupboard.

In the process of my planning to become a childminder this week I concentrated on sorting toddler penguin's dinners out and then sorting ours out.  When toddler penguin used to go to the childminders before Christmas I didn't mind so much if I didn't feed him well the days he didn't go because she did such a good job herself.  But now I'm a full time mum I need to offer more balanced and nutritous meals but yet also need to be quick if we have days where we get home from the park late.

Monday - Ham & Egg Fried Rice
Tuesday - Fish Fingers, Waffles, Brocilli & Cauliflower
