Reasons to be Cheerful

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

A week later and toddler penguin still has the splinter in his heel but it doesn't seem to be bothering him, no sign of infection so I've decided to ignore it.  Just putting magnesium sulphate on it every day and a plaster. He did also manage to get a splinter in the palm of his hand at the beginning of the week and that was a drama in itself to remove it but thank goodness for lollipops.  Slience!

I went out on Friday night with some friends and missed the last train home.  Ended up staying out till 3am in a cocktail bar and then stayed at a mates. I felt guilty at the time but this is no way a regular thing and my batteries were recharged and I think with a night out every now and then you become a better mum.  I'd do it more often for the cuddles of being welcomed home however the hangover that went with it is not something I'd like to repeat.....this century!

Baby penguin is unsure of her food at the moment.  We are halfway between purees and finger foods.  Some days she wants one and not the other.  I think it depends on her mood.  As much as I hate the messiness of finger foods I love watching her explore and squish everything.  She still has no teeth!

So the sun is shinning, I don't remember when I last wore a coat and I'm loving this weather!  Please stick around sunshine!

The Gallary - Green

TheGalleryThis weeks theme from Sticky Fingers is Green.

I am spoilt for choice this week as Green is my favourite colour (along with purple). We have a green lounge, our tiles in the kitchen are green, toddler penguin's bedroom is green, our bridesmaids wore green and our towels are green (and purple). Toddler penguin wears a lot of green as it really suits his bright red hair.

As per last week I want to share two of my favourite pictures with this weeks theme.

The first is one that papa penguin took about 8 years ago when he first got the photography bug.  We've since had it blown up and it now is displayed above the fire place in the lounge. I don't know why I love this picture as dandelions are considered weeds.  However a friend recently pointed out that weeds are only unwanted plants in the wrong place.  I find dandilions quite impressive and up until last year didn't realise the yellow dandilions were the same as the white fluffy ones.  I've seen a you tube video of the transformation process and its pretty impressive.

My second photo I want to share is of toddler penguin in his green sweater picking daisies on the green grass at Bluestone in Wales. There is a picture of myself like this as a toddler and just the innocence in it melts my heart!

Reasons to be Cheerful

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

At this precise moment in time I am struggling to think of my reasons to be cheerful as I feel rubbish for making my son cry.  He has a splinter on the heel of his foot which is about a cm long and the area around it is rather red.  I ended up sitting on him to try and get it out and it got to the point where I thought the neighbours might call the police.  I only tried for about 3 minutes but it was 3 minutes of hell and now he is at nursery having fun and I'm at home feeling guilty and sad!  Parenthood eh....noone said it would be easy! Papa penguin can give it a go when he gets home whilst I help myself to a glass of wine!

So to focus on the better things in life.

This week also marks the one year anniversary of my blog. I feel like I have so much more to give in the blogging world and I know I'll get there but I just feel there just aren't enough hours in the day to look after two kids, run a household and update my blog.  I'm happy to continue with my reasons to be cheerful, reviews of products and recipes and my generaly ramblings! I love looking at the stats page and seeing which are my most popular posts.  So far they are the post about our new playroom with the penguin wallpaper, my Ferrero Rocher cupcake recipe and the review of the Lakeland Duo Icing Kit. I've only had between 150-200 views of these posts which might be little compared to some people but it makes me feel loved haha!

We spent the weekend at my mums celebrating her one year anniversary to my stepdad.  She put on a fab spread and I put on 6lbs!  Food was so good and the puddings were even better.  Wish I had taken more pictures! I did manage to catch this one of toddler penguin building a tower for baby penguin to knock over. I love it when they play nicely together....hope it lasts!

The Gallary - Dads

TheGalleryThis weeks theme from Sticky Fingers is Dads.

I wanted to share two pictures this week.

The first one is of me and my daddy when I was a baby.  Sadly my dad passed away in 2005 and not only never got to meet papa penguin but never got chance to meet his grandchildren. He would be so proud of them!  I reckon baby penguion would've had him wrapped around her little finger from birth!

This one is of toddler penguin when he was 15 months old taken by my sister inlaw Auntie Cas being carried by papa penguin.  I have this picture framed in our hallway!

Reasons to be Cheerful

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Since last week's reasons to be cheerful I broke my toe....literally that evening of writing the post.  So I've been housebound pretty much but luckily not sofa bound. No rest for the wicked! Not much to be cheerful for except our gorgeous playroom which I have practically lived in all week!

Papa penguin and I still made date night on Saturday.  We went to ASK Italian Restaurant and I polished of 3 prosecco's along with a three course meal.  It was yummy yummy and I look forward to going back again at some point.

Back to the prosecco's.  Well I'm not a big drinker (these days) but I love love love that tipsy feeling!

Now the sun may be hiding but it is still warm which means we haven't had to put the heating on for quite a while....good to watch those pennies and save some money.  Also with the sun rain sun rain thing going on my garden is blooming nicely!

We had some friends visit on Monday and her youngest has chicken pox.  Mini chicken pox party at casa penguin but no sign of my two getting anything. Loved the company and I wish Juicy a speedy recovery so her mummy can get some sleep!

So with all the time at home I've taken lots of pics of the kids....

Please come and like me on my new facebook page or follow me on bloglovin'!   In three weeks Google Friend Connect will be disappearing :(

What's in my Handbag?

MoneySupermarket have a handbag competition at the moment and Laura from Petit Moi - Big World has tagged me and encouraged me to get involved.

I really enjoy reading others 'What's in my bag' posts so I'm looking forward to his one. The competition can be found here: and if you want to enter you've got until Monday 1st July.

So here's my current bag:

Its a Radley satchel handbag and I bought it whilst on holiday with friends in Weymouth in August 2011 for £150.  I wanted to treat myself as since toddler penguin was born in April 2010 I had only used the changing bag. I have used this bag pretty much every day since.

MoneySupermarket are looking into the average contents of handbags and how much these contents are worth....this is whats inside my bag.

Working clockwise from the top is my oystercard in my Radley holder which I've had since the days when the oystercard was first introduced circa 2004.  To replace it would cost £15.  Then there is my blackberry.  I've had this since November 2010 and at my recent upgrade, to save money I decided to keep the phone and downgrade my tariff...I went from paying £35 a month to £15.  The phone is insured at £5 a month and was recently replaced at Christmas when all of a sudden it just stopped working.  I'm not sure of the cost to replace it - maybe about £175.

Next we have a plaster for those blister emergencies and my all time favourite beauty products...Benefit Dandelion blusher (£23.50), Lancôme Juicy Tube (£15), Vaseline Créme Brulee (£2.49) and L'Occitane Hand Cream (£8).  The first two are I admit older than the 12 month suggested life but hey I can't afford new ones.

Next we have my door keys which have a very cute penguin keyring which was a gift from a friend.  You'll see my car keys are separate from my door keys (also have a penguin keyring) as I quite often only go out with the buggy and we only have one set of car keys, I'd hate to lose them.  Also if papa penguin needs to go out in the car he doesn't need to take my door keys with him.  I'd hate to think what the value of these bits of metal are but they are the key (excuse the pun) to our most personalised possession at home!

Loose in one of the zipped sections in my bag are some coins.  They are shinny and are stamped 2012.  The year of baby penguins birth.  I'm trying to collect them all like I did for toddler penguin.  I also carry around a pencil and a pen.  The pen was a gift from another friend.  Its a Swarovski Crystaline pen and retails at about £25. My I love Claremont pencil cost me 50p from the National Trust on a recent visit.

The most expensive part of my bag is my purse.  Its Gucci and I bought it duty free from Heathrow for £250 - prekids and premortgage when I had no other worries in the world. Inside are the normal credit cards, library pass, National Trust membership and store points card, but also photos of the kids and a typed up eulogy of my father who passed away in 2003.  This piece of paper is priceless to me as I have it nowhere saved on my computer.  There is no money in my purse as I've not been out in a week due to broken toe.  I lie....there is 13p.

Finally I always carry around tissues, a few hair clips and my handsfree set.

I am shocked to learn that my handbag and contents are worth just under £750 and that doesn't include what my keys are worth! If I had to buy from scratch these days I would not be able to afford that.  MoneySupermarket claims that the average cost is £850.  I am on my way to check my handbag is included in my household insurance!

Having two kids aged 3 and under, I also carry around a baby changing bag. This was toddler penguins changing bag and now I use it for baby penguin as well.  Here's a picture of it and its contents.
I carry around bottles, juice, snacks, wipes, nappies (in the black travel changing mat at the top), bibs, first aid kit, sun cream, antibacterial wash, dummies, camera, toys, Clipper White Tea Bags and a wrist strap.  I also carry around spare clothes and a reusable shopping bag.  The changing bag itself is from Kipling and I have a Canon S100, those two together are worth about £400.  The rest I guess I could get from a quick shop to boots for about £25, except for the toys which would be priceless in toddler penguins eyes!

Fingers crossed for the MoneySupermarket competition.  I would love a new handbag.

In case you don't read the t+c's you also need to tag 5 people for the contest, so here's my list.

The Mini Mes and Me -
Ups & Downs, Smiles & Frowns -
The Beesley Buzz -
Really Rachel -
Shay and Family -

Good luck everyone and I look forward to seeing whats in your handbag!

The Gallary - Inspirational Women

This weeks theme from Sticky Fingers is Inspirational Women.

I hereby dedicate this blog post to my mum, the most amazing woman in the world.

Obviously without her I wouldn't be in this world here writing this post.

She brought me into a world where the women did everything in the household and having had two children myself and an amazing husband who helps out loads around the house, not just with the chores but with the parenting as well....the good bits and bad bits....I only have nothing but praise for my mum!

This is a picture of my mum and I on her wedding day last June when I was 6 months pregnant with baby penguin.

Seasons Change

Being National Trust members we visit Claremont Landscape Garden a fair bit.  We I do with toddler penguin and baby penguin whilst papa penguin is at work.

Claremont is one of the only National Trust gardens in Surrey that has a children's play area which makes it a great place to visit with toddler penguin (for your info Polesden Lacey also has one!). Also the thatched cottage holds weekly events for the little ones.  Every Thursday in June its the teddy bear's picnic.

We feed the birds, ducks and swans every time we go and with their tea room recently refurbished we pretty much also stop for tea, scones and an ice lolly.  They had a microwave for me to heat baby penguins bottle and purée's and a lovely outdoor eating area.

We visited last week and I took a picture of the lake and I decided to compare it to a picture I took back in November and just had to share!  I just love the way the seasons change and the trees look pretty at any time of year!  A warm autumns day is still my favourite time of year!

Tale of a broken toe

Bugger...I've only gone and broken my toe :(

Playing with the kids yesterday afternoon, toddler penguin was annoying baby penguin who at 7 months old does not want to be tickled roughly under the chin and have things thrown at her face.  I think toddler penguin must have had a bucket load of sugar at nursery in the morning because he had a huge amount of energy and generally at the moment doesn't listen to what I say!  So I took his inflable spiderman away and in the process of going to put it up high with him chasing me, I was crossing the playroom which had the happyland toys everywhere and I lost my balance, nearly fell on baby penguin did a funny dance and stubbed my toe on the huge happyland house.  It was against the sofa so had to give when I went flying into it!

Initially it didn't hurt as toddler penguin was screaming for his spiderman.  He then stood on a die cast car so I was comforting him and gradually the pain got worse and worse to the point that I was panting in pain like in labour!  I hobbled to the freezer got some ice and elevated it (first aid training came in use here) and distracted toddler penguin by asking him to find certain toys.  After 5 minutes of still ridiculous pain I rang papa penguin and told him to come home NOW.  It was 430pm and I just couldn't see how I was going to get the kids dinner on.

I managed to get a bowl of water and ice and for the next half hour kept dipping it in and out.  Papa penguin is an hour away and couldn't leave the office till 5pm so I managed to get some nuggets on for the toddler and found a savoury pouch for baby penguin. Gosh what a mess that makes when you don't feed them in a highchair!

So anyway kids were fed, I survived the next hour muttering various swear words under my breathe and papa penguin came home.  He bathed baby penguin, pj's on her then off we went to a&e.

Now our nearest is Epsom General Hospital and there are plans to close this a&e along with the maternity ward.  I can't see why as every time I've been to a&e there have been lots of people there so its obviously needed.  I arrived at 7pm, was seen by triage at 8pm, x-rayed at 830pm and home by 9pm.  Not bad considering I expected it to be a lot longer.  Time flew by quickly as I took my crochet with me - I did get a few stares but I don't care as I believe crochet is so coming back in fashion!

So the negatives of my broken toe.....
  • It hurts
  • I can't carry baby penguin up and down the stairs
  • I can't drive
  • I can't walk far
  • I can't meet a friend on Monday and go to the park
  • I can't meet my friend on Wednesday for dinner
  • I can't take toddler penguin to nursery and pick him up
  • I have a wedding in 5 weeks, healing time of a broken toe can take 6 weeks - there goes my plans to exercise and get into a dress I like!
  • I'm so going to have to watch what I eat if I'm going to be sofa bound
  • I can't do housework

And the positives....
  • Papa penguin has had to stay and work from home today taking toddler penguin to nursery and helping me put baby penguin down for naps
  • This means that he can join in the celebrations of his aunts birthday this evening
  • I managed to crochet two granny squares whilst waiting in a&e last night
  • I have an excuse to sit and do nothing
  • Toddler penguin gets to play doctors....not sure if this is positive or negative
  • I don't have to do housework

Reasons to be Cheerful

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Wahoo the sun is out!  The sun is shining, its been 19° most days this week and I'm loving it!

I got a tax rebate wahoo!  So I treated myself to some purple converses that I've had my eye on for ages!  Love love love them! Here's a picture of baby penguin showing her appreciation for them.  A momentus day as a few minutes later she bum shuffled!  She hasn't done it since this space!

I'm looking forward to the weekend as my friend has offered to babysit so on Saturday papa penguin and I are going on a date!  Ha its been a while and no doubt we'll probably spend the whole evening talking about kids and work we can do on the house but I 'm really looking forward to it. Be nice to hold hands without a buggy in the way!

I've managed to set up a facebook page.  Its been a learning experience but I really enjoyed getting all techie! Please come along and like it!

The Gallery - Two

I follow quite a few blogs that take part in Sticky Finger's Gallery linky and have decided to join in as well.

I always have the camera to hand and am constantly taking pictures.  When toddler penguin was a baby every picture taken was uploaded to my mac and saved and soon I wasn't left with much space and had to have a mass archiving session.  This time around I'm a lot more savvy with pictures and only keep the ones that are actually any good and delete the duplicates.

I take my photo's with a Canon PowerShot S100...a 30th birthday present from papa penguin!

So this week's theme is Two.  Such a broad subject yet so close to heart.  I have two gorgeous children who bring me joy every single day.  They are 2½ years apart and I couldn't have imagined a better age gap! I took this picture in our garden over the weekend, the start of summer in my opinion!
I look forward to joining in next week!
