Friday's Product of the Week - Sistema Twister Bottles

I've had these Sistema Twister Bottles for a few weeks now and I think they area great.  They are colourful and therefore fun for all the family.

We have them in two different sizes, big ones for myself and papa penguin and smaller ones for toddler and baby penguin.

To have a drink you twist up the spout and twist it down to close.  When the spout is flush with screw cap then it will not leak.  They are easy for my 15 month old to grip and my 3.5 year can open it by himself.  Did I mention they are leak proof too!  Plus they are of a soft plastic material so if dropped they shouldn't break.

I know a few people that own these bottles and have had no problem with putting them in the dishwasher, however the Sistema website states that all bottles are not recommended to be put in the dishwasher. I clean with the baby bottle brush every now and again but generally a hot soapy soak and rinse suffices.

Just a quick look in the box of bottles at toddler penguins nursery shows me that these are popular so if you haven't got one already you need to get one.  They are great value for money and come in a great range of colours!

The Gallery - Something Beautiful

The theme for this weeks Gallery over at Sticky Fingers is Something Beautiful.

I'm very sad to say that I lost my Grandad just over two weeks ago. It is his funeral on Friday and I'd like to share these two photos of my Grandad and my Gran on their wedding day.

My Gran passed away on her 80th Birthday five years ago.  My Grandad was 88 years old and two days.

They got married in August 1948 and what I like about these photos is the look on my Grandad's face.  He certainly was a beautiful handsome man and he looks so chuffed.  The second photo makes me smile so much and he just looks so happy bless him!

Papa Penguin is working away for a few days and sadly its my Grandad's funeral on Friday so we are off to spend a few days at my mums.

Therefore the only meal I'm making is Spaghetti Bolognese which we all love.  I make it with onions, mince, bacon, basil, oregano, parsley, paprika, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, chopped tomatoes and a carton of passata and its amazing!!!!

Monday - Spaghetti Bolognese
Tuesday - Freezer Food - Salmon Risotto
Wednesday - Beans on Toast
Thursday - Freezer Food

Friday's Product of the Week - Silicone Ice Trays

My product of the week are these silicone ice trays made by Zeal.

I originally bought these when pureeing baby food to freeze. It is such a good idea to make a batch of pureed veg or fruit and freeze individually.  That way when it comes to serving babies food you can choose a stick of say pureed carrots, another of some swede and maybe a stick of parsnip to make a tasty nutritious meal at short notice.  It is also handy for making a pureed fruit salad.  You can puree some pear, apple, mango and papaya all individually and then defrost of stick of each together for a lovely dessert.

My kids are now 1 and 3 years old so no need for pureeing however I regularly make a batch of pasta sauce and freeze it in these ice trays.  Then at dinner time all I need to do is put some pasta on, take a couple of sticks out of the freezer and zap them in the microwave.  You can make the pasta sauce with lots of vegetables before zapping in the food processor. I also free bolognese in these trays as they take up less space in the freezer than freezer pots in premade portion sizes. Voila a healthy meal in just a few minutes. Happy freezing!

The Gallery - New

The theme for this weeks Gallery over at Sticky Fingers is New.

I'm a bit of a shopaholic so I thought this category would be easy....except after from some slippers which I bought with a voucher as occasionally my feet are too cold for my crocs, I haven't actually bought anything new.

However the picture I share today is of baby penguin (aged 14.5 months) rocking her new wellies that I bought just before Christmas (from Sainsburys if anyone is interested!)

This photo was taken on a trip to a local park whereby we let her walk instead of leaving her in the buggy.  She absolutely loved it and it was a joy to see her so happy!

Red Thai Chicken Curry Recipe

This is one of our all time favourite recipes at home. We can easily eat this one or even twice a week.  You can swap the vegetables to what you've got in the fridge, I like to have a lot of colour in my curry and the sweet potato really makes it more creamier.  You can also use green thai curry paste instead of red thai.  Plus I know its a different country but sometimes we serve with naan bread as well if we are super hungry! This will serve us 3 dinners and 1 lunch.

On a low heat and in a big lidded wok fry approx 190g of red thai curry paste (I use sainsburys own brand) for a few minutes and then add a can of coconut milk (Lidl are best for this) and then turn up the heat.  Once boiling turn the heat down and add 450g chopped chicken breasts and stir.  Simmer with lid on for 10-15 minutes and then add a diced courgette, one small peeled and diced sweet potatoes and one sliced red bell pepper. Continue to simmer with lid on for a further 10 minutes then tip 100g of spinach and a handful of chopped coriander. No need to stir in just yet, just let the spinach wilt for 5 minutes then add a tablespoon of fish sauce, give it one final stir and then serve with basmati rice.  I use 1/3 of a cup per person of rice cooked in 1 cup of water per person and gently simmer till all the water is absorbed.

Friday's Product of the Week - Bibs

These bibs are a must buy purchase for any mum out there who is putting their babies on to solids.

These particular bibs that I buy are from Jojo Maman Website and currently retail at £5 per bib.

Why do I love them? Firstly they catch all the dribbles and spills.  Baby penguin once burped and then spewed....rather a lot.  The bib caught it all without any leaks.  Secondly they are really easy to wash.  I don't put a lot of our melamine bowls in the dishwasher so have to wash up after every meal anyway so the bibs are washed with the bowls and plates then hooked over the tap to dry.  To test  The velcro fasteners do take a bit longer to dry than the rest of the bib but I do have four of these bibs to alternate between! You can also put them in the washing machine.

Thirdly the are really comfortable for babies to wear and they fit really well around their upper bodies.  They even allow my daughter to still suck her toes.  Also they can be folded up and easily put into a bag and taken out to restaurants and on picnics.

And finally their designs are fab.  Very cute and funky for boys and girls alike!

Friday's Product of the Week - Christmas Cards

I know it is silly to have a Christmas Card as a product of the week in January but I'll explain why.

As we approach the 6th January and with a busy weekend instore I've been taking down all the decorations as and when I can.  Last night were the Christmas Cards.

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone that sent me a Christmas card, including all the children at toddler penguin's nursery who I've never met but sent him one.  I love receiving Christmas cards and I actually enjoy writing them.

Secondly I'd like to apologise to those of you who sent me a card and realise what I do with them.  Hope you don't mind but we're all for recycling here in this household!

Here are all our cards piled on the table.
I then put on the tele with papa penguin, got the scissors out and cut them up to make gift cards.

I spilt them into two piles.  One for large presents and one for small presents.

Now I never need gift cards again.  They will then go in the Christmas box for next year.  I can either just use a bit of tape to stick the on like a flap or using a hole punch make a hole for a bit of ribbon.

Belated Wobbles Wednesday

Having a bank holiday (New Years Day) on a Wednesday has really confused me as to what day it is!

A year ago I weighed 73kg.  Yesterday morning I weighed 68kg.  I'd like to weigh 65kg and I'm not going to "Diet" to achieve it but I'm going to try and be more active and reduce my portion sizes. I'm back on myfitnesspal recording my food intake.

Actually the whole family weighed themselves yesterday and here were the results:

Mummy penguin (31yrs) 68kg
Papa penguin (30yrs) 82.7kg
Toddler penguin (3.5yrs 18.1kg
Baby penguin (14months) 11.9kg

I start my more active lifestyle today joining my friends on a buggy fit session. Lets hope I can walk tomorrow unlike last time where I was aching for about 3 days!

Happy New Year

I could actually copy and paste the post I wrote this time last year as it is exactly how I am feeling right now about new years resolutions!

I've decided I'm not going to make any as I know I won't stick to them instead I'm going to make goals to aim for!

1. Read more than 2 books.  Because that is how many I read in 2013.  Shocking I know but surely I must be able to read at least 3!

2. Stick to our budget.  Unfortunately we rocked up £4k in credit card debt last year.  Fortunately papa penguin got a bonus that just about managed to pay it off.  If he gets the same bonus next year then it would be nicer to treat ourselves or save it than pay off cards.  I admit I'm a bit of a shopaholic at times but we've gone through our incomings and outgoings and we've given ourselves a monthly budget and we are going to stick to it.

3. Get back on myfitnesspal.  This isn't to diet, I hate that work.  As soon as I say that word diet I want to eat more.  Logging my food intake on myfitnesspal really helps me keep track of my eating and helps me spread my snacks throughout the day.  I have a really bad sweet tooth and have worked out that I can fit 4 bourbon biscuits into my daily snack allowance so instead of eating all of them late afternoon when I get the munchies and then wanting more after dinner I'm going have two and then two later.

4. Blog.  I admit I struggled to find the time to blog but new year new words! I'm going to update my Facebook page more and hopefully get some more followers ;)

5. Food. I love to cook and I'm good a meal planning but I get bored cooking the same thing all the time some I'm going to try out a new recipe every week and hopefully blog about it!

6. Me time. I want to crochet more.  I want to read more.  I want to chill more.  With two kids to entertain during the day the only free time I have is in the evenings which is when I squeeze in housework so with a cleaner recently employed (I know not everyone can sort their life out with a cleaner) I'm looking forward to re-organising my life at home for just me!

Happy New Year everyone x
